The School-Based Dental Prevention Program
The School-Based Dental Prevention Program (SBDPP) is a statewide program that provides children in kindergarten through eighth grade with free dental screenings at school and referrals to dental providers to address dental treatment needs.
The focus is on Title 1 schools, and practitioners may even provide simple services like dental sealants that help protect children's teeth from common problems like tooth decay and gum disease.
This program won the Tennessee Public Health Association Public Health Work Group Award of the Year in 2017 for significantly contributing to community public health.
Nurses Fluoride Varnish Programs
The Tennessee Department of Health, Oral Health Services developed this program. The Nurses Fluoride Varnish Program is a partnership between the medical and dental fields designed to address tooth disparities in children. With this program, nurses in medical clinics apply fluoride varnish to children's teeth at their well-checks or visits to the medical clinic to ensure protection for their teeth.
They do this because some children don't receive preventive dental care or screenings until there's a problem or until they are school-aged. Providing preventive dental care during medical well-checks ensures they receive dental care they may not have received otherwise.
