What Is a Root Canal and How Does It Work?
A root canal is a treatment to save an infected or damaged tooth by removing the infected tissue inside it. Each tooth contains a soft inner layer called the pulp, which holds nerves and blood vessels. When bacteria reach this layer through a crack or deep cavity, infection develops and causes the pain you feel. Removing that infected pulp stops the problem at its source and allows your natural tooth to stay in place.
At Sullivan Dental Partners, we use digital imaging and precise instrumentation to complete root canal treatment in Brentwood, TN with accuracy and as much comfort as possible. Advanced technology lets us see exactly what’s happening inside the tooth before we begin, so the process is efficient, targeted, and tailored to your specific anatomy rather than generalized.

Is a Root Canal Right for Your Tooth?
Not Sure If Your Tooth Can Be Saved?
What to Expect During Your Root Canal
Evaluation and Imaging
Before anything else, you'll have a full assessment of the affected tooth. We use digital x-rays and 3D imaging to see exactly what's happening inside, which allows us to plan your treatment precisely. You'll know what to expect before we begin, and any questions you have will be answered at this stage.
Numbing and Comfort Preparation
The area around your tooth is thoroughly numbed so you won't feel pain during treatment. For patients with dental anxiety, we offer sedation options to help you stay comfortable and relaxed throughout. Most patients are pleasantly surprised at how little they actually feel once the area is prepared.
Removing the Infection
With the tooth fully numb, we gently access the inner chamber and remove the infected pulp tissue. The canals inside the tooth are then carefully cleaned, shaped, and disinfected to eliminate bacteria and protect against re-infection. You may feel some pressure, but the discomfort associated with the infection itself will already be fading.
Sealing and Restoring
The Tooth Once the canals are clean, the tooth is sealed with a biocompatible material to close off the space. In most cases, a custom crown is placed to restore the tooth's full strength and appearance. Your bite is checked, and you'll leave with a tooth that functions normally again.
Ready to Stop the Pain and Save Your Tooth?
What to Expect After Your Root Canal
First 24-48 Hours
Some sensitivity and mild soreness around the treated tooth is common during the first day or two. Over-the-counter pain relief is typically all that's needed, and most patients return to their normal routines the following day. Avoiding very hard or crunchy foods for a short time helps the area settle comfortably.
First Week
Most sensitivity resolves within a few days. If a crown is being placed separately, you may have a temporary restoration in the meantime, and we'll give you clear guidance on caring for it. Any lingering discomfort beyond the first week should be reported to our team so we can check on your healing.
