What Is a Tooth Extraction and How Does It Work?
A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. While teeth are designed to last a lifetime, certain situations make removal the best option for protecting your overall oral health. A surgical extraction is typically needed when a tooth is impacted, broken at the gumline, or hasn’t fully come through the surface, requiring a small incision to carefully access and remove it.
At Sullivan Dental Partners, our approach to tooth extractions in Brentwood centers on thorough planning before anything else. We use digital imaging and 3D scans to fully understand the position and condition of the tooth, so we can perform the procedure with precision and minimize disruption to surrounding tissue and bone.

What to Expect During Your Tooth Extraction
Consultation and Imaging
Before anything else, we take a thorough look at the tooth using digital x-rays and 3D imaging. This gives us a clear picture of the tooth's position, root structure, and surrounding bone. You'll leave this appointment knowing exactly what to expect, with any questions answered before your procedure day.
Numbing and Comfort
Setup On the day of your extraction, we begin by numbing the area completely. If you've opted for sedation, that's administered here as well, so you're fully comfortable and relaxed before we proceed. You'll feel pressure during the procedure, but not pain.
Extraction
For a surgical extraction, a small incision is made in the gum tissue to access the tooth. In some cases, the tooth is gently sectioned to make removal easier and less disruptive to surrounding tissue. The entire process is typically much quicker than patients expect.
Closing and Initial
Care Once the tooth is out, the site is cleaned and, when appropriate, sutured to support healing. We place gauze to manage initial bleeding and go over your aftercare instructions in detail before you leave. You'll know exactly what to do and what to expect in the hours and days ahead.

What Recovery Looks Like After Tooth Extraction
First 24-48 Hours
Some mild swelling and tenderness in the area is completely normal during the first day or two. Plan to rest, stick to soft foods, and follow the care instructions we send home with you. Most patients find over-the-counter relief is all they need, though we'll discuss additional options during your appointment if relevant.
First Week
Swelling typically peaks around day two or three, then gradually improves. You'll want to continue avoiding hard or crunchy foods and keep the area clean using the gentle rinsing technique we recommend. Most patients return to their normal routines within a few days, though more complex extractions may take a bit longer.
