Why Choose Dental Sedation

Dental sedation can calm your nerves and relieve pain and discomfort. At Sullivan Dental Partners, we offer various sedation options at our Brentwood dental office, including nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation.

Here are five reasons why patients choose dental sedation in Brentwood, TN.

1. Reduces Anxiety and Fear

One of the main reasons people seek dental sedation is anxiety. Whether you’ve had a negative experience in the past or simply dislike the sights and sounds of a dental office, sedation can help you feel calm and at ease throughout your visit.

Sedation dentistry is especially helpful for patients who:

  • Have a strong dental phobia or fear of needles
  • Struggle to sit still during appointments
  • Have had traumatic dental experiences in the past
  • Delay treatment due to anxiety

By reducing anxiety, sedation helps you stay consistent with dental care — which is key to preventing problems before they become serious.

2. Lowers Discomfort

Patients who need extensive dental treatment can ask about sedation to lower their discomfort and help keep them comfortable during lengthy procedures. Sedation can also help patients with sensitive gag reflexes, sensitive teeth, and low pain tolerances. Sedation dentistry is an effective way to help patients have a more relaxing experience.

3. Several Options for Sedation

We offer nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”), oral sedation, and IV sedation to our patients at Sullivan Dental Partners.

  • Laughing gas is the most common and works by breathing oxygen and nitrous oxide through a nasal mask. The laughing gas gives feelings of calmness and relaxation, and the effects wear off almost instantly when the mask is removed––so you can continue your daily routine without interruption.
  • Oral sedation is a pill your dentist gives you before your procedure. It provides feelings of relaxation and drowsiness and can last for hours, so you will need a designated driver to take you home after your dental appointment.
  • Intravenous (IV) sedation is conscious sedation that enters the bloodstream and fully relaxes patients during treatment. Patients usually don’t remember their treatment while using IV sedation. Since the effects can last for hours, the patient needs a driver to take them home after their appointment.

4. Safe and Effective with Minimal Side Effects

When administered by a trained and experienced professional, dental sedation is extremely safe. Dr. Sully and our team will review your medical history, discuss any medications you’re taking, and tailor the sedation plan to your needs. We carefully monitor you throughout the procedure to ensure your comfort and safety every step of the way.

Most patients experience minimal side effects — often just drowsiness or mild grogginess — which usually resolve within a few hours.

5. Quick Recovery Time

Depending on your type of sedation, your recovery time can be reasonably quick. Laughing gas wears off within minutes once you stop using it, but oral and IV sedation can take longer. However, most patients feel just fine after having a good night’s sleep.

Is Dental Sedation Right for You?

If you’ve been putting off dental visits because of anxiety, fear, or discomfort, dental sedation could be the solution that helps you regain control of your oral health. Whether you need a cleaning, a filling, or a more advanced procedure, sedation dentistry can transform the way you experience dental care.
