Oral Surgery: 5 Tips for a Smooth Recovery Process

medium Oral Surgery 5 Tips for a Smooth Recovery Process

If you’ve had oral surgery, following instructions and caring for yourself and the surgical site is critical if you want a smooth, uncomplicated recovery.

When you have oral surgery in Brentwood, TN, your dental team will give you tips for taking care of yourself at home after your procedure. These instructions typically include the following five steps.

#1: Take the Day Off

Your body needs rest to heal and recover. If you were sedated for your procedure, you might be drowsy, plan to take it easy. Avoid any strenuous activities that involve bending or lifting.

#2: Ice Is Your Friend

Some swelling or bruising after your procedure is normal in the first few days. Reduce swelling and relieve pain by placing an ice pack on your jaw for 30 minutes. Remove it for 15 minutes then repeat the process.

#3: Protect the Clot

After surgery, a protective clot starts to form over the site to help it heal. If the clot is disturbed, it can lead to a very painful condition called dry socket. Avoid smoking and drinking through a straw as the sucking motion can dislodge the clot.

#4: Plan on a Soft Diet

For the first few days, stick to soft foods like applesauce or yogurt, and avoid hot, cold, spicy, or chewy foods.

#5: Call Your Dentist if You Have a Problem

Following these steps help ensure a smooth recovery. But if you experience excessive bleeding or swelling that doesn’t subside in two days, or have any other concerns, call your Brentwood dentist right away.
